About Virgin Media
Virgin Media plc is a British company headquartered in Hampshire, United Kingdom. They are a telecommunications outfit, which provides both mobile and landline phone services, cable television and internet broadband services.
It was bought out by Liberty Global plc in 2013 after previously having had been listed on both the NASDAQ and the London Stock Exchange.
The business was originally a merger between the then struggling NTL and Telewest brands. Both these had been facing a downturn prior to being purchased by the Virgin Group in 2006.
It has it’s own fibre-optic cable network across the United Kingdom (reference) and by 2012 had a total of about 4.8 million cable customers while having around 3 million mobile phone customers, 3.5 million TV cable customers and about 4 million broadband internet customers.
Virgin Media customers were able to see Sky channels as a part of their cable program guide, but this deal ended in 2007 when the two entertainment giants failed to reach an agreement. A media tussle ensued and the two companies had to be relegated by the National Consumer Council. In 2007, the company threatened to file a legal case against BSkyB under the UK Competition Act 1998.
A deal was eventually struck in 2008 that benefited both parties.
