About TV Licence

In the United Kingdom, any home, business, hospital or school that watches or records live television, need to have a license to do so. Transmissions of live TV include the forms of terrestrial, satellite, cable, or internet services.

Income gained from the licensing fee is used mainly to fund TV, radio and internet services that fall under the BBC. This figure in recent years is between £3.5 and £4 billion. British residents over the age of 75 are exempt from this fee. This is essentially a tax as it is set and regulated by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport of the United Kingdom and first paid into the government (reference) before going to the BBC.

The company behind the contract for TV Licensing, is Capita – they are responsible for the administration and enforcement of the TV license fee and are set to earn over £1 billion for their 15 year contract.
