About Natwest

National Westminster Bank is known as the abbreviated “Natwest” in the United Kingdom. It is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, but has it’s roots in National Provincial Bank and Westminster Bank. The takeover by Royal Bank of Scotland Group took place in 2000. It has around 1500 branches around the UK and over 300 ATM’s. It currently has over 7.5 million individual customers and almost 1 million small business account registered.

During the booming 80’s, banks in the UK went through a deregulation process that allowed stock market growth and major investor potential.

The bank took advantage of this time and increased it’s market share exponentially (reference) until the crash in 86.

It occupies what was first the tallest building in the UK (National Westminster Tower or Tower 42) until Canary Wharf overtook it some years later.

In 1999 there was a merger between Legal & General and Natwest. This was the first of it’s kind as it was a bank and an insurance company. Clearly it was eying a bigger variation of financial products. The deal was worth an estimated £10.7 billion

After some attempt of hostile takeover, Royal Bank of Scotland eventually took over in 2000.
