About is an online holiday and travel retailer that was started in 1998 and is part of the “dot com” boom. The original concept was to offer late deals online as this was where discounts could be typically found.

In less than two years has over half a million regular subscribers and it expanded to include gifts, travel and entertainment.

It floated on the London Stock Exchange in March 2000 after having raised $31 million from seven investors such as Bass Hotels & Resorts, BAA, Sony Music Entertainment, Starwood Hotels,, Vivendi’s Viventures and Mitsubishi. Shares opened at 380p giving the company a value of over half a billion pounds sterling. The price went up on the first day and at it’s peak the company was valued at £768 million – before it came back down to 492.5p per share.

The company was acquired by Sabre Holdings in 2005 in a deal valued at £577 million.
