Jet2, often referred to as Jet2.com, is a low-cost airline headquartered at Leeds Bradford Airport. It has a number of other bases throughout the country, including one at London Stansted Airport and another at Newcastle Airport, as well as one in Alicante-Elche Airport in Spain. The company is parented by Dart Group plc, a West Yorkshire-based holding company. It also runs the subsidiary company Jet2holidays. Its Executive Chairman is Philip Meeson and its CEO is Steve Heapy.
Founded in 1983 as Channel Express, the company was originally a freight operator, transporting goods in bulk. In 2001, after the company’s acquisition by Dart Group, it began providing passenger flights too. Throughout the 2000s, the company expanded its reach, setting up bases throughout the country and operating scheduled flights to many European destinations.
It now flies to over 50 destinations in Europe and elsewhere, boasting destinations for beach holidays, city breaks, and ski resorts. It also has nine airport bases in the UK and a fleet size of over 70. In 2016, it operated over 40,000 flights and carried more than six million customers. This showed massive growth since 2003, when it operated about 5,500 flights and carried about 600,000 passengers. The company has also won a number of awards, such as the Best Low-Cost Airline – Europe and Best Airline – UK at the 2017 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards.
