About Child Tax Credits

Child Tax Credits are a form of financial assistance offered to families on low income that have children under the age of 16. If you have a child under the age of 20, and they are training or in full-time education, then you may also be able to claim those credits.

HMRC has a specialist Child Tax credits team (reference) to help with any enquiries. They can be reached by calling the telephone number below. HMRC has a specialist team as they deal with over 60 million enquiries each year from the general public. They will be able to help with all of the most frequently asked questions.

Child Tax Credits Eligibility

There are a number of key questions you can ask yourself to determine whether or not you might be eligible for it.

Do you live in the United Kingdom for almost all of the year?
Are you, yourself, aged 16 or older?
Do you have any children living with you that are over the age of 16?
In the 2015/16 tax year, did you earn less than £26,100?

If you are answering yes to these questions, then you may be entitled to some form of Child Tax credit. To check exactly how much, you need to give the team a call on the telephone number at the top of the page.

Child Tax Credits Payments

The amount you will be able to get varies depending on your situational circumstances. These include things like the annual income of your household, the number of children under your roof, and whether or not your child has any sort of disability.

If your household earns less than £16,105 in a year then you may be eligible for the full amount of Child Tax credit. The highest amount is £7,195 per year per child.

If you earn more than £16,105 a year then it’s likely the amount you will be able to claim in Tax Credits may be reduced during your assessment.

If your circumstances change and this pushes your income above the lowest threshold, you must alert HMRC to prevent getting yourself into any sort of trouble. This may include having to pay your benefits back.

Child Tax Credits Renewals

If you are eligible for Child Tax credits, and you’ve been receiving them this year, then you need to make sure you keep the Tax Credit office up-to-date with your circumstances to make sure you can keep receiving the benefit.

If you don’t keep the Tax Credit office up to date then your benefit could be stopped, and if you have deliberately deceived the office then you could be asked to repay any amounts you have been paid.

To request a Child Tax credit form to renew your claims, or to update the Tax Office directly, give the team a call on the telephone number at the top of the page.
