About Aviva

Aviva was founded in 2002 as a result of a merger between CGU and Norwich Union. A British international insurance company based in London, Aviva has over 30 million customers in 16 countries. It’s biggest market is the UK, being the biggest general insurer and leading life and pension provider, followed by being the second largest insurer in Canada.

Aviva is listed on both the FTSE 100 Index and on the New York Stock Exchange.

Formerly partly Norwich Union, Aviva transferred her client base to the new name and phased out the old name over a period of 5 years.
They purchased RAC plc Breakdown recovery in 2005 for £1.1 billion which it then later sold to The Carslyle Group in 2011 for £1 billion.

In 2012, they announced plan to close or sell 16 of their non-essential businesses to focus on the main areas of business. Part of this change was the sale of its South Korea operation.
Later that year, Aviva US Corporation was sold to Athene Holding for $1.8 billion, which was then later sold again to Global Atlantic.

In 2015 Aviva carried out a share take-over of Friends Life Group as the CEO for that group (Andy Briggs) became the UK Aviva Life CEO.
