About Nationwide

Nationwide is a British mutual building society and the largest of it’s kind in the world.

It was founded in 1846 in Northampton Town and later in London. Over the years it has had a few name changes and many (in fact hundreds) of mergers o make it what it is today – namely the second largest provider of household mortgages and savings in the UK as well as over 7% share of current accounts countrywide.

They offer Retail banking, Savings, Mortgage loans, Investments, Insurance, Current accounts, Loans, Home insurance, Travel insurance and Credit cards and employ around 17 000 people.

It is a member of the Council of Mortgage Lenders and Building Societies Association and is regularly ranked number one for customer service amongst similar brands.

They kept their mutual status by avoiding the float on the London Stock Exchange (reference) that was so popular among former building societies in the 80’s and 90’s. They actually left that decision to a vote and despite media hype and public opinion, they retained their mutual status and avoided selling out as it’s members voted 33 700 against turning into a bank.
