About Tesco Mobile
Tesco Mobile Limited is a mobile network operator under the supermarket chain giant, Tesco. The network is virtual – meaning that they have no physical network, but rather use the already established O2 network (in the UK). They operate in the United Kingdom, Ireland (under Three Ireland), Hungary (Vodafone) and Slovakia.
Ireland’s version of Tesco Mobile was also on the o2 network until 2015. This was die to a deal being struck in 2006, where they (o2) would offer the same virtual network as they do in the UK. After Three purchased o2, the announcement was made that all o2 services would cease to operate in Ireland and the o2 brand would be absorbed by Three Ireland.
Tesco Mobile has been active since 2003 when the supermarket giant decided to move into the mobile phone market (reference). Negotiations were made and a decision was reached to use virtual networks. Tesco had at the time been moving it’s stores into the far East and expanding throughout the UK. The group is known for their competitive pricing and location convenience.
