About Holiday Inn
Holiday Inn is a brand of hotels founded in 1952 by Kemmons Wilson in Memphis, Tennessee. It was originally a motel chain, but currently comprises of over 3600 hotels in both the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.
The name was given to the hotel chain as a joke because of the 1942 Christmas-themed, musical film “Holiday Inn”, starring Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby.
Shortly after the relative success of the first hotel in Memphis, Wilson partnered with Wallace E Johnson to build more around the same location. By 1956 there were 23 Holiday Inn hotels, but this figure soon doubled within two years as the partners began to sell their hotels as franchises.
Holiday Inn pioneered the pre-booking system by launching Holidex. This was a centralised reservation system where guests at any of the hotels, could make a reservation for any other hotel in the chain before leaving. A sort of online booking system.
They stayed ahead of the loop, taking advantage of the new AT&T toll free numbers at first and then of the 70’s small boom of micro-computers.
Over the years Holiday Inn partnered with a range of companies to strike deals that meant service stations or restaurants or shops were a part of the Holiday Inn buildings or forecourts.
The eighties saw a big growth as they purchased hotels and chains alike, to set their own personal brand across the world.
