Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is a department within the government of the United Kingdom. This department is responsible for the collection of taxes including income tax, corporation tax, inheritance tax, excise duties, stamp duty, value added tax and climate change levy, also the payment of some benefits and the regulation of the national minimum wage amongst other duties.
HMRC also regulates national insurance, distributes child tax credit and child benefit and are responsible for protection of the United Kingdom’s borders – which is handed over to UK Visas and Immigration of the UK Border Agency.
Their goals are to collected the correct taxes from the public and pay the correct benefits.
HMRC has a team of investigators that investigate organised fiscal crime such as oil, tobacco and alcohol smuggling. They have powers of arrest, search, entry and detention if required. They work closely with Police and the Crown Prosecution Service.
The merger which led to the modern structure of HMRC was implemented by the Labour government in 2004. The result was a loss of approximately 12500 jobs.
The PAYE system was introduced by this department in 2013 which means that employees earnings would be taxed each month, rather than at the end of the financial year.
There is a current plan to close a further 137 branches and replace them with regional centres by 2027.
