Halifax is a bank based in the United Kingdom that is a trading division of Bank of Scotland. They are the UK’s top choice for residential mortgages and savings accounts.
The bank was originally formed in 1853 in Halifax, West Yorkshire as a building society. By 1913 it was the biggest building society in Britain – an accolade it kept until 1997 when it became a public limited company. The step towards becoming a bank and a subsidiary of Bank of Scotland (which is under the Lloyds Banking Group umbrella), came later in 2001 when HBOS was formed.
In 2009 the bank made major changes to it’s current accounts by eliminating credit and debit interest as standard (reference) and no paid and unpaid item charges.
On the 16th of October 2009, Halifax Estate Agency was sold to LSL Properties for £1.
Halifax is and continues to be an established British household name – especially in the North where a kind of regional patriotism that was more popular in the previous generation than in this one, was rife. Halifax was and still is to a large extent a working class town that had a thriving woolen industry.
The success of Halifax as a building society meant jobs for a lot of locals as expansion took place over the years.
