About Barclays

Barclays is an international bank and financial services company operating out of London, UK. Founded in London in 1690 as a goldsmith banking business and named after James Barclay, who became a partner in 1736.

Since 1896, Barclays has purchased several banks and bank-like institutions including Backhouse’s Bank, Gurney’s Bank. In the more modern era acquisitions were made of London, Provincial and South Western Bank, British Linen Bank, Mercantile Credit, The Woolwich and recently, Lehman Brothers.

Barclays is listed on both London’s FTSE 100 Index and on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2001 the bank changed PR tactics and named itself “THE BIG BANK” (reference) – this would prove to be embarrassing as that year it closed 171 branches around the UK and yet at the same time quadrupled the pay of it’s chairman.

Barclays is listed as a “Universal Bank” which means that it not only deals in commercial banking, but also investment banking, insurance and financial services.

Barclays faired relatively well during the financial crash of 2008, with bids to raise funds and the potential for China Development Bank and Qatar Investment Authority to increase their holdings in the Bank.

With a further £7 billion raised from investors in Abu Dhabi and Qatar, existing investors were outraged, eventually convincing Sheikh Mansour and Qatar Holding to open up £500 million of their new holdings to the investors.
