Capital One, also known as Capital One Financial Corporation, is a bank holding company operating in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The company has headquarters in Virginia and is one of the largest commercial banks in the US. Founded in 1988 by Richard Fairbank and Nigel Morris, the company is particularly well-known for its part in promoting credit cards in the 1990s.

It started out as the credit card division of Signet Financial Corp, a multi-bank holding company. Back then, the division was known as OakStone Financial but, by 1995, new CEO Richard Fairbank had renamed the department Capital One and made it a fully independent company. In 1996, the company issued its first credit card and spent the following years mass marketing the product. Today, it is one of the largest credit card issuers and one of the largest auto lending banks in the world.
